So, just how many pairs of skis does a person need?
The answer depends a little on who you are talking to. There are people with a large expendable income who swear blind that nothing less than a 2 ski “quiver” is adequate. They often have more pairs of skis themselves but when pushed they will say that 2 pairs is the bare minimum… One for piste, one for powder… But, then they want to go ski touring so they buy a super lightweight set up for that. And then, they go skiing on a particularly heavy powdery sort of day and their “powder” skis won’t stay on the surface so they have to buy something wider with more float. Then, they see a good price on something marginally wider than what they already have, and all the top guys are skiing them so they convince themselves they have to have them too… And so it goes on.
I’ve always been at the other end of the spectrum, believing that a good skier can ski anywhere on any ski. For sure, it’s easier to ski in variable snow with a fatter ski, but I enjoy the challenge of making my GS piste skis work wherever I choose to take them. If anyone asked me for advice on what ski to buy to add to their “quiver” I would always suggest ski lessons instead.
That was until I was offered a very good deal on some Whitedot Skis.

They get great write ups, they’re very pretty and it would make lots of people jealous if I got my hands on some… Are these good enough reasons to buy a pair? That is when the need/want argument comes into being. Nope, I don’t need them right now, but I really, really want them!
